The 12-metre class represented the pinnacle of yacht development for the highest levels of international sailing competition, from the Olympic Games (1908-1920) to the America's Cup (1958-1987).
The International Metre Rule was born on 12 June 1906 in London. It allows yachts measured under the rule to race each other in real-time (without handicap correction). As early as 1907, the first 12-Metre yachts were built in Great Britain, Germany and Scandinavia, following the first rule formula which remained in effect until 1920: For a 12-Metre yacht, the result R must be less than or equal to 12. Hull length ranges between 18 and 21 m for a displacement of approximately 30 tonnes. Two other, slightly different, formulas came into effect in 1920 and 1933.
Discover below this magnificent sailboat from 1939 which will prepare to face high-calibre competitors such as KOOKABURRA 2, the 2024 world champion in its category!
